Civil Engineering Department grant Ph.D.

Civil Engineering Department granted Ph. D. for the student (Iman K. Harith) on 5/24/2022, about:

"Innovative of nano – modified concrete mixed placed and cured at hot/dry application in summer periods"

Pouring concrete in hot weather is one of the biggest challenges facing concrete pouring in Iraq and other countries in the Middle East. For example, in Iraq, the temperature in the summer has reached 50 ° C, therefore, the construction season is shortened by at least two months (July and August). Several international specifications have recommended specific preventive cooling measures to reach the maximum acceptable temperature for mixed concrete, recently, in order to avoid the harmful effects on concrete. The main objective of the study is to reveal the effects of cooling by liquid nitrogen on the soft and hardening properties and the microstructure of hardened concrete. Many concrete mixtures were produced with different pozzolanic materials, that were poured and treated at high temperatures (40-45°C) targeted applications in hot summer periods in most regions of Iraq. Experimental design approach was followed to evaluate the efficiency of liquid nitrogen in improving the properties of fresh and hardened concrete versus other variables. Independent variables considered are ash, nanosilica and liquid nitrogen requires pouring concrete in high temperature environments can use up to 276 liters / m3 of liquid nitrogen to reduce the concrete temperature by 20°C. As a result, liquid nitrogen significantly enhanced the overall soft and hardening properties of concrete mixtures produced at high temperatures.
