Chemical Engineering Department discus MA thesis

Chemical Engineering Department discus MA thesis about "Zeolite-reinforced polymeric membranes: prominent features and radioactive wastewater treatment applications"

Thesis of the student (Taysir Khudair Abbas) aimed to treat the radiant polluted water by in Altuaitha nuclear location by manufacturing (PES) supported by zeolite type (NaY) developed to remove the cesium-137 isotope from the real nuclear effluent collected from the location and improve the performance of nanocomposite membranes for the process Removal by adding copper ferrocyanides (CuFC) to the feed solution and studying the salient features of the effect of the added concentrations of the developed zeolite, the degree of acidity and the removal factor (Decontamination Factors: DF).

The results showed that the optimum removal rate (90.2%) was obtained by the prepared membrane supported with zeolite NaY at a concentration of 0.15%, while the decontamination factor was 10.2 at pH 7.5. Therefore, copper ferrocyanides (CuFC) were added at different concentrations to the feed solution with the aim of improving the removal efficiency of the cesium-137 isotope and enhancing the decontamination factor (DF). As a result, about 99.2% of the removal of cesium-137 and 121.2 of the decontamination factor (DF) was achieved at a concentration of (0.05) g/L of copper ferrocyanides and at a pH of 7.5. Besides, the proposed reaction mechanism of zeolite and PES was explained for the first time in this study.
