Materials Engineering Dept. Discusses A Master Thesis

Materials Engineering  Dept. at U.O.T.  discussed a master thesis entitled: 

"Improve Cement Mortar by Employing Ceramics Self-Healing Materials" 

Reem Thamer Salman's thesis included the treatment of concrete cracks with independent self-healing and the manufacture of microcapsules suitable for the previous purpose. This can be achieved through :-

1- Using (Nano-SiO2, or SiC with cement) (as healing materials) inside manufactured capsule and using (Polystyrene) to encapsulate the microcapsules.

 2- Manufacture of self-healing microcapsules by pelletizing method (fluidized layer coating).

3- Including of micro-capsules in concrete with different weight ratios.

 4- Making a small incision and evaluating the efficiency of the self-healing mechanism with capsules added in concrete.

5- Verification of healing products by performing diagnostic tests such as SEM, XRD, EDS..

The results showed the manufacture of microcapsules of appropriate size compared to other methods. The results of the tests for embedding the capsules inside the concrete showed a significant improvement in the mechanical and physical properties. 100% complete incision healing was observed for samples containing microcapsules and by SEM, EDS and XRD, the microstructure became more efficient.
