Production Engineering & Metallurgy Department at the University of Technology discussed advanced processes in friction crush welding of similar and different copper-based alloys.

In this dissertation that submitted by the student (Abdul-Jabbar Saad Juma) in the field of Metallurgical Engineering, frictional welding was performed for butt joints without a filler for identical sheets of pure copper (c1020) and dissimilar sheets of copper (C1020) with pure aluminum (1145H1). Also, tubes were produced and welding of copper plates and a special technique.

The researcher indicated that friction crush welding (FCW) is a solid state welding used to join metal sheets of similar or different thicknesses, pure or alloy, which are difficult to weld by traditional angular welding methods. Friction crush welding was performed on six groups.

The welding kit used in this method is in the form of a disc designed according to specific dimensions and shape. The place of joining the plates is designed according to certain calculations, where it is in the form of an edge with a calculated height in order to fill the gap between the two pages, which is of a calculated dimension also in the absence of a filler material, where the placement of the welding plates is in an alternate manner. If a filler is used, there is no need to prepare the edge at the end of the page.
