Within the program of a receiving party for the newly enrolled students of academic year 2010-2011 and according to the instructions of the university president, the department of petroleum technology held an introduction scientific meeting for the new students about oil and gas in Iraq on Wednesday 29, 2010 at the department conference room. The lecture was given by the expert Mr. Faris Salih Alshakhli and in the presence of the department president and the department vice-president for scientific affairs.

The meeting discusses the subject of oil and gas history in Iraq and the methods of oil recovery from oil reservoirs and oil productions. This lecture has been received the attention of the department students

        

Within the instructions of the university of technology and the department of petroleum technology which aims on emphasizing the continuous scientific communication between academic institutes and working fields. The department president carried out a formal visit to the South Oil Company in Basra province for the purpose of signing MOU between the two sides. Thus the managing director of the company (Mr. Jafar Dhia Hajam) has welcomed the scientific cooperation between the university and the company.

On the hand, a meeting has been held with the manager of Oil Operation Organization (Mr. Bassim Abdulkarim Nasir) in which they discuss the ways of keeping the scientific working connection between the two sides for the purpose of creating a complete scientific aspect. In addition to that it has been agreed to provide the training opportunities for the department student within the oil and gas sector for the service of our beloved Iraq. The company has also supplied the department with various samples of rocks and geological maps which are related to its oil wells. During the time of the visit to the Basra province, the department president has visited Basra University where a formal meeting has been held with the dean of the engineering college and the departments’ presidents. In this meeting, a discussion has been apprehended concerning the continuous scientific communication between the universities.

The President of the University visit to the department and his meeting with first year students

Part of the University’s program regarding social learning, and value provision for freshman, the President of the University (Dr. Kahtan Khalaf Al-Khazraji) showed up to meet with the first-year students accepted for the year 2010-2011. During his visit, which coincided on Monday Dec. 13th, 2010. The President gave a speech regarding values and morals, and listened to the ideas of students regarding the future of the department. The President confirmed that the University will do its best to accommodate the ideas and suggestions of the students, and especially those dealing the Student Housing. In addition he referred to the scientific importance of this department to prepare the engineering staff who will deal with the applied engineering specialties. The President also spoke about the importance of scientific and academic opening towards the oil industries for the service of our beloved Iraq.

The Korean International Cooperation Agency paid a visit to the department and was warmly welcomed by the President of the University, on Thursday December 2nd, 2010. The Vice-President was also presented besides the director of the Information and Communication Technology Center (Dr. Mazin Samir Ali), along with many of the teaching staff.  The leader of the KOICA group, Mr. Seo has viewed the scientific labs, and other areas of the building. The group also met-up with the staff and students of the department to get a better understanding of the scientific environment.

·      The opening of an academic fair and  the department’s labs

With backing from the university President, the academic fair titled “The Scientific Poster” was opened. The fair specializes in the production of oil and gas. The labs of the department were also opened on the same day. The presence of the senior deputy of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research (Dr. Abd Ali Al-Tai) was an important factor at this occasion, along with a number of visitors and staff for both the ministry and the university. The Dean of the department, Dr. Khalid Ajami pointed that this academic fair came as a fruit of the staff’s efforts in the department for the purpose of reaching a higher level of scientific knowledge to the students and what the world has reached in the field of oil and gas industry. In addition, the scientific deputy of the department (Dr. Asawir Abd Al-Rasool) made clear that the goal and nature of this academic fair and all the information concerning extraction technology, alongside oil and gas industry and industrial problems in the oil sectors. In addition, the party includes opening the scientific labs which are the chemistry lab and the oil geology lab.

·      The welcoming of freshmen for the year 2010-2011

Part of the department’s special program for welcoming the first ever petroleum technology class, the Vice-President for Academic affairs, Dr. Ahmad Ali Musa welcomed the students on Sunday, October 24th. He spoke to the students about the scientific important of this department in today’s world. He also talked about the importance of sticking to the outlined uniform. The President of the department, Dr. Khalid Ajami Sukar added a few words about the importance of petroleum specialty to Iraqi economy and pointed to the roll of oil engineers into the economic policy of the country.
