Faculty Member from Civil Engineering Publishes Chapter on Reinforced Concrete

Dr. Ibtisam Raheem Karim, a faculty member in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Technology, has contributed a chapter to a book published by the British publishing house IntechOpen, titled "New Insights Into Reinforced Concrete Technology".

The chapter, entitled "Dynamic Response Analysis of Coastal Bridge Members Exposed to Water Forces and Earthquakes," delves into the dynamic response analysis of reinforced concrete bridge piers subjected to water forces and earthquakes. The chapter focuses on the impact of waves and marine currents on the foundation of bridge piers within coastal bridges, based on laboratory experiments conducted as part of a doctoral student's requirements. Numerical models and parallel computing technology were also employed to integrate the effects of earthquakes with water effects, considering the nonlinear behavior of soil and concrete. Additionally, the fifth-order wave theory by Morrison was applied to accurately calculate hydrodynamic forces.
