Materials Engineering Department holds a symposium on the phenomenon of widening desertification in Iraq in cooperation with Electromechanical Engineering Department and the Echo of Horizons Foundation for Development
Under the auspices of the President of the University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Hassan Al-Ghabban, and under the direct supervision of the Head of the Department of Materials Engineering, Assistant Professor Dr. Hussein Alaa Jaber, the symposium tagged the phenomenon of widening desertification in Iraq and its impact on cities was held in the presence of the Assistant President of the University for Administrative Affairs, Prof. Dr. Hussein Hamid Karim, and the Vice President of the Horizons Foundation for Development Dr. Ahmed Yassin, Head of the Department of Electromechanical Engineering, Prof. Dr. Hisham Selim Anid, and a large number of university teachers and employees on Al-Kindi Hall in the Electromechanical Engineering Department.
The symposium began with the playing of the national anthem and verses from the wise remembrance of the reciter Abd al-Rahman Mizher Rahima, followed by the reading of Surat al-Fatihah on the souls of the martyrs of Iraq.
The head of the Department of Materials Engineering, Prof. Dr. Hussein Alaa Jaber, delivered a speech in which he stated that the issue of desertification is one of the topics urged by international classifications, including the classification of the Times within the program to combat desertification and environmental pollution in the world. Where desertification is one of the dangerous environmental phenomena that threaten the lives of economic and living societies, adding that Iraq has recently witnessed an expansion of the phenomenon of desertification in most of its regions, and this will endanger its food, economic and environmental security.
For his part, Dr. Ahmed Yassin, Vice President of the Horizons Foundation for Development, delivered his speech.
The symposium included one session and three lectures, chaired by Prof. Dr. Jamal Jalal Daoud and rapporteur by Assistant Professor Mervat Mahdi Hanous.
The first lecture was delivered by Dr. Qassim Tibn Bazoun from the Ministry of Environment, entitled Desertification, its environmental, economic and social causes and effects
The second lecture was delivered by Dr. Ahmed Fayyad Saleh from Al-Mamoun University College, Department of Geography, titled Desertification and its Impact on Cities and the third lecture was given by Dr. Hayam Numan Fleih from Al-Ma'mun University College, Department of Geography, entitled Drought Risks in Iraq and the Climate Water Deficit, Ways and Results and Ways to Face those Risks
The symposium concluded with the distribution of certificates of appreciation to the lecturers and participants in the symposium.
