A seminar in ERC on the
"Assessment of pollution by heavy metal concentrations at
Al-Huwaiza Marsh/ Messan Governorate" |
Within the cultural season of ERC a seminar was held on
Wednesday, 15/07/2015, Mr. Talib K. Al-Shemary presented a seminar
entitled: "Assessment of pollution by heavy metal concentrations at Hawr
Awm Al-Warid/Al-Huwaiza Marsh/Messan Governorate.". The lecturer sowed
that HawrAwm Al-Warid locates in the Northwest of Hawr Al-Huaizeh with
an area of 70 square kilometers, 90% of the marsh area covered by dense
reeds and the main water source is Al-Hsaitchi River. The pollution of
environment by high concentrations of heavy metals may result in severe
environmental impacts on the bio-availability for those environments in
addition to the potential health effects on the population of those
areas. In his study, he estimated concentrations of some heavy metals in
water of Hawr Awm Al-Warid. The aim of this study is to form an idea
about the background of the presence of heavy elements in water of Hawr
Awm Al-Warid and to indicate whether there is a presence of
contamination with heavy metals in the marsh by comparing the results
of laboratory tests of the current study with the results of tests prior
to the study, and showing the changes and variations in concentrations
of heavy elements at marsh water between the two periods. The study
showed the presence of high concentrations of the elements manganese,
nickel, chromium, lead and zinc, the study suggested that the petroleum
activity in the region in the past few years and agricultural activity
based on the chemical fertilization are the reason for the rise in the
concentrations of heavy metals in Hawr Awm Al-Warid.
