Scientific lecture

At 12/03/2017 and as a part of scientific activities schedule which prepared by materials engineering department, a scientific lecture was held under the title:
Computer applications in materials engineering
Which speech by Assis. Prof. Dr. Abbass K. Hussien the head of general materials engineering branch which involved the computer software to calculate the input materials in metal, ceramic and composite materials and calculate the mechanical properties like (hardness, tension and creep) and compare it with experimental work with an error less than 4%, an input numbers value to select the optimum condition.
A head of this scientific meeting was done by Assis. Prof. Dr. Farhad M. Othman; dean scientific assistance and with member of Assis. Prof. Dr. Laith Q. Abbass; daen management assistance and Assis. The seminar was held at the hall of the martyr al-Hakim / University of Baghdad on Tuesday, 02/28/2017 with presence of university presidents and professors from various universities and some of the relevant authorities.

Baghdad Municipality Initiative

On 02/27/2017 a step worthy of praise and appreciation to the production department at the Directorate of the Municipality of Baghdad, represented by its General Manager Mr. Abdul-Jabbar Khalaf Algzaeriy send vehicle customized to cleaning the Department of Materials Engineering to contribute to wash and clean the interior and exterior courtyards in the department and a distinct effort by the Municipality of workers.

Seminar

On 02.26.2017 a lecture was presented by Assist. Prof. Dr. Farhad Mohamed Osman the scientific associate of the Department of Materials Engineering titled:
Review of Rapid Prototype Manufacturing
Which focused on the use of process rapid modeling for the manufacture of prototypes or finished products or the number or templates for polymeric, metallic and ceramic, and techniques where described according to input of the manufacturing process whether the material is a liquid or solid or in the form of powder. This will lead to overcome many of the difficulties associated with the production of the usual means. The lecture was presented in the graduate department hall in the presence of some of the professors of the department and graduate students

 

Changing name Postgraduate Hall

The Postgraduate Hall (PhD) in the Department of Materials Engineering / Technology University was renamed and the associate name of the late Prof. Dr. Fadel Atya Gyad to the Hall of Prof. Dr. Fadel Atya Gyad and under the administrative order 3 h d / 492 on 13.2.2017 and associate with the approval of the President of the University by the oredr of the Secretariat of the Council of the university number m.g / 1/146 on 01.02.2017.

On 02.27.2017 met Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Hassan Al-Ghaban Head of the Department of Materials Engineering (Agency) with a delegation from Municipality of Baghdad consist of:
1. Dr. Eng. Mahmoud Aziz Jabbar / Director of Environment Department at the Municipality of Baghdad
2. Eng. Abdul-Jabbar Kalf Al-Gzaery / director of production department in the Municipality of Baghdad.
They discussed many of the problems related to Municipality of Baghdad with regard to recycle consumed damaged materials and the possibility of Department of Materials Engineering in addressing these problems and provide appropriate solutions through projects for students or opinions of professors and researchers, and discuss a range of measures including the creation of a joint seminar or workshop in the near future to take advantage of common include asking these problems and to listen to the processors and solutions.
The meeting was attended by a group of professors department whom : Assist. Prof. Dr. Aseel Basem Abdul-Hussein, head of the Committee on Conferences and seminars and Luctuer Hashim Nemah Sharif

Department Meeting

At 21/02/2017 a meeting held in materials engineering department with present of Head of UOT Prof Dr. Ameen D. thamer, important matters were discussed which involve:
1. Work on five-years plan to develop and encourage master to continue to get PhD. degree.
2. Strategic planning to prepare scientific research and publish them in international scientific journals possess impact factor.
3. The selection of UOT to adopt Independence project was a result of their high performance and this give additional responsibility to success this step which is the first in Iraq.
4. Proceeding with independency project require all to work hard to get a good reputation to UOT, and this success need a big collaboration to succeed the scientific institutions knowing that country is crucible of all types, efforts and nations.
5. Enhancement of scientific homes, because the national project need all efforts to reach high level and the best always.
6. Strategic view to build the country, and collaboration in this using higher education and universities.
7. Work with strategy and planning is the key of development and against laziness.
8. The country development and advancing need mechanisms for solutions to any problems in country sections using a solution with scientific researches.
9. Ethics and correction of relationship between peoples to emphasis this country.
10. Sustain the academic staff rights enhances their value and place in society.
11. Follow-up and maintenance of academic staff sites and update them with up to date research to enhance the university ranking.
12. Trust in your success is the base rule of university success to sustainability of scientific procedure.
At the end of meeting Assist Prof Dr. Ahmed M. H. Alghaban a dean of materials engineering Department thank a UOT head for their advice.
Also the dean gives his acknowledgments to academic staff and advise them with some notes about publishing in registered scientific research, update CV’s and commitment to official hours and the timing of lectures, and development of students levels and follow up the work of labs.

“Identify the various response optimal factors for metal weld joint geometry”
The paper include study the effect of parameters on geometry of different metal weld joint for Stainless steel 304 and mild steel ASTM A516 Grade70 using GMAW technique. Various response Optimal factors was used to identify optimum parameters for GMAW were three trial parameters were used (welding current, welding speed & welding electrode diameter).

Assist.Prof.Dr. Ahmed M.H. Alghaban; materials engineering department dean published four scientific research which is:
First: “Structural, Physical and mechanical properties of titanium carbide reinforced with Nano niobium carbide” which published in American journal for advance physic science.
The research involved the using of powder technology in preparation of a mix of titanium carbide reinforced with Nano niobium carbide to examine structural, physical and mechanical properties. The result shows an increment in properties with addition of nano niobium carbide to base material of titanium carbide.
Second: preparation and study the structure of titanium carbide prepared by powder technology which published in American journal for advance physic science.
The research involves preparation and structural study of titanium carbide using powder technology with superior properties and at low temperature.
Third: preparation and characterization of composite titanium carbide and Nano aluminum oxide.
This research was published in journal of advance applied and natural science. The research involves the study of structural, mechanical of titanium carbide with nano aluminum oxide with different addition which show an increment in mechanical properties of for prepared composite with increment of aluminum oxide up to 4wt%.
Fourth: effect of addition of nano zirconium oxide particles on structural and mechanical properties of titanium carbide.
The research was published in journal of advance applied and natural science, were titanium carbide was prepared by powder technology by adding of nano zirconium oxide. It has been show that the increment of prepared carbide density with addition of nano Zr. Up to 4% then decrease also the mechanical properties increased up to 6wt%.

at 19th of Feb.,2017, the university president assistance for Administrative Affairs prof dr. Sami abu Alnoon visit the materials engineering department to check the proceeding of final examination of first course for 1st grade accompanying with Assist. Prof. Dr. Ahmed M. H. Alghaban material Eng. Dean and his scientific assistance Assist. Prof. Dr. Farhad M.Othman, where the proceeding of exam for day and evening studies was done, also he encourage the students to make more efforts to improve for better, wishing to our dear students success in doing first course exam.

At 01/02/2017 solidarity with national criteria for quality and celebrating with national program for universities ranking, materials engineering dep. Collaborate with prod.eng & Metallurgy Dep. at UOT held first specialized course entitled:
“Basic course in Laboratories quality management system according to ISO 17025” as a first stage in reclamation and development program for Materials engineering staff who work in labs to get full benefit of full quality management system.
Assist. Prof Dr. Abdulkhaliq F. hmood; Director of Quality Assurance Division in Prod. Eng. & Metallurgy certain that this course is the first step which reinforce management and technician site for labs. Staff as a part of 5 days’ programs to achieve a specific program to get dependency of labs to serve our university and country.
The participants in this course were 34, and Training certification were given to them.

Authored a book

At the beginning of 2017, a Alymama library for printing and published a scientific book entitled installation engineering materials authored by Assist Prof. Dr. Abbas Khamas Hussein, Head of Branch general materials Engineering / Department of Materials Engineering - University of Technology, where the book included seven chapters, the first chapter included a general introduction, The second chapter was titled the equilibrium and Kinematics, while the third chapter entitled the crystal structure, the fourth chapter talked about to the atomic structure, and the fifth chapter talked about the structure of solid materials, Chapter six ensure crystalline defects, Chapter seventh and last chapter talked about phase diagrams.

Workshop

Dated 15. 1.2017 held a Department of Materials Engineering workshop entitled (recycling engineering materials) in the Hall of Graduate Studies included multiple topics, such as recycling of polymeric materials and delivered by Assist. Prof. Dr. Jawad Kadhim Elwy Head of the Department of Materials Engineering, explaining some of the important points in the classification of plastic materials and how to make a recycling phases which include stages of collection, separation chopping and grinding . The second topic was titled recycling metal materials delivered by Assist Prof. Dr. Farhad Mohamed Osman Scientific Associate of the Department of Materials Engineering in which he discussed some of the concepts and modern methods used and recycling to the private and public sector and some obstacles and ways of treatment. The activities of this workshop were attended by a group of professors in the department in addition to high studies.

Within the scientific activities of the Department of Materials Engineering the committee cultural newsletter in department has organize a weekly schedule of scientific lectures (Seminar). The first lecture, which was held on 8.1.2017 entitled: The concept of progressive materials functionally prepared by Assist Prof. Dr. Alaa Abdul Hassan Attia , Rector for Academic Affairs Assistant in conjunction with the L.Dr. Ahmed Hussein
The lecture addressed the concept of functionally progressive materials, manufacturing methods, engineering applications and the comparison between them and the traditional composite materials and some important research in this area.
The second lecture, which was held on 22/1 under the title: Review of teeth implants applications delivered by Assist. Prof. Dr. Jawad Kadhim Alwey, Head of the Department of Materials Engineering, where he reviewed the history of teeth plantation in addition to the advantage and disadvantage of all types of teeth implants, such as dental amalgam filling and the filling cement, It also a review of alternative solutions to the disadvantages of teeth . And there was addressed to factors on osseointegration of teeth planted in addition to recent research for metal implants

1. Joind research is marked by: Infrastructure and properties of Fright fiber nickel nanoparticles by electric spinning technique
Which was published in the Journal of Advanced Applied Science in 06/02/2016 which included the preparation of Fright fiber nickel nanoparticles at different ratios by using Zinc nitrate hexahydrate, nickel Hydrate Fright, Nonahydride iron nitrate, polyvinyl pyrrolidine and Dimethylformamide. This has been used as materials operational. The crystalline behavior studied of these materials by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) - Which led to the change of phases nanoparticles from random to frate twirling by depending on the degree of calcination temperature at a temperature of 700 Celsius. Crystal size was calculated by a Shearer formula by 23.75 nm.
2. Joind research is marked by: Fabrication and characterization of polymer electrical conductive from nylon 6 / multi wall carbon nanotubes by electric spinning technique
Which was published in the International Journal of Thin Films Science and Technology on 13.3.2016 , the research included calculation of Electrical conductivity of pure liquid polymer to Nylon 6 and a ratio was obtained of 33.8 × 10-3S / cm, while this percentage increased with the addition of carbon nano-tubes of the liquid polymer, , also the research included the examination of structural membranes prepared by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and calculated the average fiber diameter of nanoparticles and found equal to 140 nm, and increased electrical conductivity of the membranes prepared from pure nylon.
3. Joind research (Assist Prof. Dr. Akram Rahim Jaber, Assist Prof. Dr. Laith Kais Abbas) is marked: Effect of high voltages and data flow velocity on preparation of diameter nanotube by electric spinning technique
Which was published in the Journal of physical sciences and applications in 2016 and the research included use of electric spinning technique to prepare scaffold tissue simulate, biologic polymers, industrial and natural to be used in tissue engineering applications, fluids were prepared from polyvinyl alcohol PVA as biological polymer to manufacture scaffold by electric spinning technique to emulate the ideal shape and size of the fiber spun by changing operational conditions for spinning electric and shedding high voltage of 5-25 kV and a flow rate of the liquid polymer from 0.1 to 10 ml / hr.

In the Journal of Emirates Engineering for Research Engineering in number Issue 1 - Volume 21 - December 2016
In this research nano-powders was prepared from oxide ceramic by chemical-thermal spray technology. Have been manufacturing metal unilateral and bilateral oxides from base metal salts which dissolved in water CuSO4 and Ti (SO4) 2 (for the production of titanium oxide) TiO2 (copper oxide) CuO respectively at a spray temperature reached (700 ± 5 ° C) in different mularriet ( 0.10, 1.0 and 1 mol ). The nanoparticle powders were produced used as an additive material for cement mortar in different ratio weight (5.0, 5.2, 5 and 5.7% ) for use in construction applications including buildings packaging.
The results showed that the nanoparticles prepared powders have size granules (7. 55 nm) for titanium oxide and (8.67 nm) for copper oxide with crystalline structures and systems of Tetragonal and Monoclinic respectively. Since the bulk density has increased and thermal conductivity decreased with increase the ratio of nanoparticles powders added and prepared cement mortar has been improved with adding powders of nanoparticles which makes them useful in future applications, especially modern construction applications

In this research it has been studied hardness (Shore D), water absorbency, Fracture strength testing, Impact test and Durability of Fracture at Nano- composites with the basis of polyester unsaturated resin reinforced Kevlar fiber. Samples processed in a manual casting way according to the base of the mixing of different size fractions from polyester unsaturated resin, fiber and carbon nano tube (1, 1.5, 2.0 %). Polyester unsaturated resin was ground reinforced with 3% volume fractions from Kevlar fiber and (0.5 %) carbon nano tube. The study of the properties of water absorbency, hardness (Shore D) and fracture strength. Results showed that the absorbency of water increases with increases volume fractions for fiber with carbon nanotubes , sample (poly ester + 3% fiber Kevlar + 0.5% carbon nanotubes) has a lower absorbency of water. Fracture test, impact test, Hardness test and durability fraction of the sample (poly ester + 3% fiber Kevlar + 0.5% carbon nano-tubes) has the highest value for the composites of nanoparticles.

Manufacturing and characterization of ternary metallic oxides using thermo-chemical spraying technique as a gas detector.
Vol. 12, No. 4, P.P. 132- 140 (2016)
Abstract:
In this research ternary oxides were prepared using thermo-chemical spraying from nitrate salts of (Sn, Zn & Cd) with (0.1M) concentration and (50:50) weight percent on Si-based n-type (111) plane with and without notches and dimensions of w:20um, depth 7.5 um as a gas detector with different concs:10,50,100,500 ppmy in the air at room temp and connecting with oil industry.
Crystallization and morphology of prepared films has been inspected using XRD, SEM & AFM techniques. The results showed oxide films that prepared from salts of Zn2SnO4 and Cd2SnO4 and the gas sensitivity with scratches on surface was enhanced which make detector proper for low concentration of H2S danger gas in oil industry.

“Local porcelain rocks and natural cow’s bones for corrosion protection of low carbon steel in oils medias”
This patent a part of Msc. Student from engineering technical college (hyaam R. Atwan) with mutual supervision with Assist. Prof. Dr. Amal S. Mirza.
This patent discusses using nickel coating with local porcelain and nano alumina and cow bone powder for enhancement of corrosion resistance for low carbon steel that used for oil container, the study was made at 60oC, the results show a good protection efficiency.

On 18/12/2016 a group of Teaching in Department of Materials Engineering / University of Technology (Assist. Prof. Dr. Akram Rahim Jaber, Assist. Prof. Dr. Rana Afif Majeed, Assist. Prof. Dr. Aseel Basem Abdul Hussein) participated in an exhibition of scientific inventions, which held by the Ministry of oil for two days 18-19 / 12/2016 on the Oil Cultural Center hall. The exhibition included the participation of 52 inventors from all ministries, universities and state institutions, Department of Materials Engineering- University of Technology participated in three inventors and four inventions won patents for each:

"Manufacture of bio-composite materials as substitutes for metallic materials susceptible to corrosion which used in Implant"
The patent Discussed manufacturing of composite material and other functionally graded metal pure titanium and hydroxy apatite ceramic with biocompatibility biggest as a substitute to bolts used in Implant to reduce the corrosion problem occurring between the titanium screw and pillar of the bond between the screw and tooth ceramic. composite material was manufactured as a bulk and with five graded layers in the structure of pure titanium (first class) to Hydroxy Apatite pure (fifth layer) to be graded in the functions and homogeneous in composition as powder metallurgy manner.
It used several techniques to diagnose the prepared materials, including X-ray diffraction and electron microscope imaging scanner and energy dispersive spectroscopy.
Examination of corrosion was Conducted + in the solution emulator to the human body at pH 7.4 and a temperature of 37 °C to indicate the behavior of the material within the human body in vitro addition to conducting the biocompatibility of materials prepared examination, the results shows the success of manufactured items as a bio-materials of tests conducted on these materials.

the first meeting was held for the teaching staff of Materials Engineering Department for the academic year 2016/2017 in Wednesday's day on 30/11/2016, headed by assistant professor Dean Dr. Jawad Kadhim Alaiwi oversees the meeting in the presence of President of the University Prof. Dr. Amin Douai Thamer and his Assistant for Scientific Affairs and Alumni’s, assistant professor Dr. Alaa Abdul Hassan Attia and all faculty members in the department.
At the beginning of the meeting collage dean welcomed Mr. President of the University and his Assistant for scientific affairs and the attendances thanking everyone for the efforts made by them during the current academic year, hoping to continue the bid to serve the scientific process and that Allah grants to them and to all Iraqis of good and safety with a brief illustrates the most prominent and the most important section achievements during this period. The many topics by Mr. President of the University asked, referring to the positive aspects of the department. Sovereignty has touched on several things, including: -
- Praise the wonderful march through the university external evaluation, which reflects the internal assessment and this is all due to the hard work and efforts by university professors.- The university offers and access to advanced scientific orders depending on the rankings.- Emphasis on the continuation and strengthening of cultural relations with many of the universities of the world, including the US, German, Iranian and Malaysian through memorandums of understanding.- Consolidation of relations and cooperation with all parts of institutions.- Mr. Assistant Scientific touched on the registry in the Google Scholar site and QRCID and registration of all published scientific research and productions of teaching staff signatories mentioned because of its importance in raising the scientific assessment of global rating of UOT.

The benefits of this device are reflected in:
- Preparation of cheap coating.
- The design of the machine in a different way from the traditional cold spraying device because it works in two directions horizontally and vertically, while the traditional spraying device (which is not available in Iraq) works horizontal direction only.
- Work with ceramic and metal powders with the same efficiency.
- Design cold spraying device, which is designed for the first time to comply with the vertical and horizontal spraying.
- Get a Nano coating dismissive of water (hydrophobic coating) through the use of the device in our country.

The Assistant Prof. Dr. (Akram Raheem Jaber) and The Assistant Prof. Dr.( laith Kaiss Abass) are lecturers in department of materials engineering – university of technology published an article in Advance Engineering and materials sciences journal , USA . The article entitle:
“Fabrication of electro spun Getosan /Nylon 6 nano fibrous membrane toward metal ions removal and antibacterial effect
The researchers deal with :
Nylon 6/Chitosan membranes were fabricated by electro spinning onto a Millipore glass fiber filter to produce nano fibrous filter. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water contact angle (WCA) were done to characterize the produced filter. Filter removal capability (adsorption) for metal ions was investigated for lead nitrate (Pb(NO3)2) and sodium chloride (NaCl). The antibacterial effect of the Nylon 6/Chitosan was investigated for Escherichia coli. Removal optimum values for Pb(NO3)2 and NaCl reached 87% and 75%, respectively. This research demonstrated that Nylon 6/Chitosan nano fibrous membrane has an enormous applicable potential removal for metal ions from aqueous solutions, antibacterial activity reaching 96%, and reasonable inhibition zone against Escherichia coli (E. coli).

The head of department “Assistant Prof. Dr. Jawad K. Oleiwi” published an article in Engineering and technology  journal. The article entitle: Design of Prosthetic Foot From Polymer Materials Reinforced By Carbon Fibers. This article focuses on the Loss of the lower limb can cause loss of mobility. At all places and at all times, efforts have always been made to make up for such a loss. In this work polymer composite materials had been used to manufacture prosthetic foot. Polymer composite materials PMMA:SR/PUR reinforced by carbon fibers (CF) were prepared as suitable material for prosthetic foot then, tensile characteristics were measured and determined. Numerical work included finite element method (ANSYS-15) was used to analyze and evaluate deformation, stress and strain characteristics of a new designed prosthetic foot, which was treated as three-dimensional structure composite polymer material. The experimental and theoretical results were improved that polymer composite materials can be used for this application.

"Preparation of Nanomaterial from local material (Asphalt) by simple method with advanced applications"

The patent is abstracted by utilization of simple and cheap preparation method; which is the thermal decomposition of cheap and abundant starting material, the Asphalt. Three percentages of Ethanol Alcohol (20,35,50%) has been added to the Asphalt yielded the targeted results. The preparation method followed in this patents signify elevated productivity and high purity.

A group of professors of the Department of Materials Engineering (Assist. Prof. Dr. Akram R. Jabur, Assist. Prof. Dr. Laith K. Abbas, Safa M. Muhi Aldain) got a patent entitled: “Nano Air Filter”, from Ministry of Planning / The Central Organization of Standardization and Quality Control. Patent No. 4651 on 8/8/2016. Electrospinning technique to nylon 6 polymer solution (10%) dissolve in formic acid (99.9% purity) solution in room temperature was done to fabricate filter with nanoscale dimension porosize for air filter application. Nanofibers with (142 nm) average diameter that is distributed in Gaussian porosize distribution of average porosize (285 nm). The mechanical properties obtained from tensile test to the prepare nanofilter is with maximum stress (4.246 Mpa), Max strain (12.77%), elasticity modules of (40 Mpa), (85%) efficiency of the nanofilter to capture and stopped the alumina nanoparticles with average particle size of 50 nm which added to airflow. (SEM) observed the action of the filter which stopped passing nano particles through it.
