facilities). Bioenergy is becoming an increasingly
attractive energy choice because of high or volatile
fossil fuel prices, concerns about national energy
independence, the impacts of conventional energy use on
the environment, and global climate change. More
production and use of bioenergy can improve
environmental quality (provided best available
technologies and pollution controls are used); provide
opportunities for economic growth, often in rural areas;
support state energy and environmental goals.

Synthesis and Characterization of Mesoporous Silica for
Drug Delivery, which was supervised by Asst. Prf. Dr.
Talib Mohammad on Thursday 10/11/2016 inside
Al-Khwarizmi Hall in Chemical Engineering
Department-University of Technology. The discussion
Committee was comprised of; Prof. Dr. Najat Juma Saleh,
Asst. Prof. Dr. Inaam Akram Sabri and Lect. Dr. Saleh
Abdul-Jabbar Saleh.
The student explained that during the most
recent years, the enthusiasm for nanotechnology and
mesoporous silica materials has expanded because of the
advantages that can be gotten from these materials.
Ordinary attributes of mesoporous materials are the huge
surface range, pore volume, very much requested and
uniform pores. These attributes are extremely
fascinating for the medication conveyance framework
which draws in the analysts to begin thinking about the
mesoporous materials as medication transporters. There
are a few studies to control drug conveyance, diminish
the danger of medications furthermore for novel
biomedical applications. It is important to have the
capacity to control the arrival of the medication inside
the body by utilizing drug conveyance frameworks.
Mesoporous silica mixes have just been found a quarter
century and they have as of now pulled in numerous
specialists to contemplate these materials for a few
applications. The point of this study is to address
whether the surface functionalization of SBA - 15 tests
would enhance the stacking of a medication into these
particles. In this study we combined the mesoporous
silica (SBA-15) material by utilizing
Tetraethylorthosilicat (TEOS) as silica antecedent and
pluronic (p123) as format. The functionalization was
finished by post blend strategy with amino useful
gathering (3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane) to explore its
potential use as adsorbent for stacking the medication
from a fluid arrangement. A few portrayal means were
utilized for distinguishing the material portrayal prior
and then afterward functionalization, for example,
X-beam diffraction (XRD), filtering electron microscopy
(SEM), Wager surface aria, Fourier change infrared
(FTIR) spectroscopy and warm gravimetric examination
(TGA).Batch adsorption tests in a solitary adsorption
framework were concentrated on by utilizing two distinct
sorts of medications and considered the impact of a few
variables that influence the proficiency of the
medication's heap limit.

MSc. Student Zainab Mohammed Sabbar was awarded
a MSc. Degree in Chem. Eng. from the Department of Chemical Engineering
|
7/11/2016 |
The Student
was obtained an excellence degree after the discuss of
her dissertation under the title: Preparation of Nano
Silica Catalyst from Iraqi Rice Husk for Cracking
Applications, which was supervised by both Prf. Dr.
Najat J. Saleh and Dr. Bashir Y. Sherhan on Thursday
27/10/2016 inside Al-Khwarizmi Hall in Chemical
Engineering Department-University of Technology. The
discussion Committee was comprised of; Asst. Prof. Dr.
Shahrzad Rifat Rauf, Asst. Prof. Dr. Khalid Hammadi
Khazaal and Lect. Dr. Osama Saeed Akram.
The student explained that the
Cracking process is a very important technique in
refining industry for instance the fluid catalytic
cracking unit (FCC-unit), which is the heart of a
refinery. During this process, large hydrocarbon
molecules are broken down into smaller and more useful
ones. Catalysts are typically used in petroleum
industries in order to ensure that the cracking
reactions occur at preferable operating conditions and
to obtain the desired products. In fact, catalytic
cracking over zeolite-based catalysts is considered as
significant heterogeneous reactions in both chemical and
petrochemical industries in comparison with
non-catalytic or catalytic homogeneous reactions.
Zeolite-based catalysts are scientifically exhibited the
excellent catalytic properties, especially zeolite type
Y, as it has much higher activity and selectivity
compared with those available on natural catalysis.
Commercial source of silica (i.e. Ludox As-40) are
industrially used with other materials for synthesizing
the zeolite type-Y catalyst and economically it has an
expensive cost. Therefore, it is essential to find out
another pathway for silica source.
This work deals with the
replacing of costly commercial source of silica by a
natural source of silica from Iraqi Rice Husk (RH),
which is available in abundance at Al-Najaf province. RH
is seen to be a frugal waste material, high silica
content, and it will be able to apply as a natural
source of silica for preparation the zeolite-Y
catalysts. On the other hand, much of the husk produced
from the processing of rice is either burnt or dumped as
waste, and the majority of rice husk is burnt openly,
causing environmental and health problems. For that
reason, it would be beneficial to the environment to
recycle the hazardous wastes toward produce economical
material having a high end value.

Prof. Dr. Zaidoon Muhsin Shakoor; administration deputy
of the head of department, as well as the heads of the
branches with a number of staff from the department as
well as the postgraduate students. The student said that
the expansion in the use of human and veterinary
antibiotics was related to the presence of trace amounts
of them in the aquatic environment in all over the
world. It was proved that the traditional treatment
methods are not able to remove the stable and
non-biodegradable compounds. This has led to increase
the concerns about the potential environmental risks of
toxic effects and also the spread of antibiotic
resistance in bacterial communities. The main objective
of this work is to study the removal of some
pharmaceutical compounds from wastewater, using two
different types of solar power reactors via advanced
oxidation processes:-
1- Tubular solar reactor
with a reflective layer.
2- Solar reactor with
falling layer.

Dr. Manal Afham Thomas was
given a scientific lecture under the title "Preparation
of PVC membrane for Vacuum membrane distillation and
Nanofiltration by grafting with PEA and PVP as
additives" inside the Ibn Rushd Hall on Thursday,
20/10/2016 in the presence of the head of chemical
engineering department; Prof. Dr. Thamer Jassim
Mohammed, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Salah Salman Ibrahim;
scientific deputy of the head of department, and Asst.
Prof. Dr. Zaidoon Muhsin Shakoor; administration deputy
of the head of department, as well as the heads of the
branches with a number of staff from the department as
well as the postgraduate students. The main objective of
this study is to prepare a thin flat membrane from
chemically and physically modified polymers and to study
the performance of the membranes by applying different
processes for separation and filtration with different
liquids. Chemical modification of poly vinyl chloride
was done by polymerization and grafting with Ethyl
Acrylate monomer successfully through the polymerization
of free radicals. The membranes prepared from the
resulting polymerization and grafting were found to have
a porous structure on the upper surface, and given the
best mechanical properties with thickness of less than
pure PVC. When applying the vacuum distillation process
for membranes, they showed a significantly improvement
in the rate of flow for the prepared membranes. On the
other hand, the physical modification of the PVC by
blending with Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as an additive
showed that the membranes prepared from PVC / PVP are
hydrophilic, higher porosity and mechanical properties
less than pure PVC.
