Within the cultural and scientific activity festival of 1st term of chemical engineering department for the academic year 2014-2015, the postgraduate student Lamaa Adnan Abdul Ridha gave a lecture about her work on:

Experimental study and simulation of advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment

The supervisors are Assist. Prof. Mohammed Fadhil and Assist.Prof.GhanimMaqobool.

The lecture was carried out at Khwarizmi room in the presence of head of department, head of branches and number of academic staff and number of department’s staff and postgraduate students which happened on Thursday dated 25th Dec. 2014. She outlined her milestones which are the influence of initial concentration of pollutants, temperature, pressure, pH value, flowrate, and residence time on the performance of removal of pollutants. Studying the catalyst’s performance stability during the process and the selection of best operating conditions to get best performance of reactor by using the advanced random technique such as genetic Khwarizmi.

Formulation a mathematical model by which such the operating system is best mimics. The mathematical model represents a powerful tool to input a data set which will reduce the number of experiments and then will reduce the cost. The model was evaluated with making a comparison study between the theoretical and experimental findings.

Study the effect of various operating variables (initial concentration of pollutant, temperature, pressure, pH of solution, liquid flow rate and retention time) on reactor performance. Investigate the deactivation and stability of catalyst. Select the optimum operating conditions by using advanced stochastic technique as Genetic Algorithm. Formulating of dynamic model that could represent the system. Mathematical model is a powerful tool to provide new set of data. This can reduce the risk of experimental runs and cost will be consumed on operation. Validation of mathematical model by comparison with the experimental results.

Within the cultural and scientific activity festival of 1st term of chemical engineering department for the academic year 2014-2015, the postgraduate student Ahmed Noori gave a lecture about her work on:

Dynamic Study of Acid Gas Absorption Using Promoted Absorbent in Bubble Column Reactor

The supervisors are Assist. Prof. Safaa Alden Abdulaa  and Dr.Farah Talib.

The lecture was carried out at Khwarizmi room in the presence of head of department, head of branches and number of academic staff and number of department’s staff and postgraduate students which happened on Thursday dated 25th Dec. 2014.

Absorption methods is one of the most wide-spread methods purification of industrial gases from the acid components, it involves the transfer of materials from gaseous phase to the liquid phase. The cost of purifying a gaseous mixture is generally very high for this reason, the processes of Co2 absorption continuous interest and special importance because these compounds are present as impurities in many gaseous mixtures. The aim of work was to study and focused on the development absorbents that used of absorption carbon dioxide, and so by used the promoters as additives to improve the reaction rate of absorbents and thus increase the rate of absorption of carbon dioxide.

Seawater desalination by membrane distillation

The supervisors are Assist. Prof. Qussay Fadhel  and Dr.SAlah Salman. The discussion was held on Khwarizmi court on 30/12/2014.

The aim of the present work is desalination of saline water of various concentrations reached 100000 ppm by membrane distillation technique to produce high purity water by using "Vacuum membrane distillation" VMD system. The main advantage of this process is high salt rejection reache 99.99%. The influences of operating conditions, viz., temperature, and concentration, flow rate of the feed and absolute pressure (in vacuum zone) were investigated. The results shows that the permeate flux reached 66 kg/m2.h for solution of 35 g/L at 0.6 L/min, 65 ̊ C and 12.7 kPa(abs). The salt rejection reached 99.99% and the permeate conductivities were less than 10µS/cm. This technique is used for the first time in Iraq. Taguchi method was used to determine the contribution of each factor on permeate flux. It was found that the feed temperature is the most effective factor and the feed flow rate was the lowest effective factor on the permeation flux.

Studying of CarBon steel corrosion In Salt Solution and petroleum Products in  presence Of CO2

The supervisors are Assist. Prof. Satha Ahmed  and Dr.Shrooq Talib. The discussion was held on Khwarizmi court on 28/12/2014.

The present work is to study the corrosion behavior of carbon steel, in naturally aerated 3.5wt %NaCl solution and petroleum products in presence of CO2. A rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) system were used to study the potentiostatic polarization experiments, under turbulent flow conditions, using 3.5wt % NaCl solution as electrolyte at different temperature (298, 308, 318 and 328)K and rotating speed of (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400) r.p.m. at each temperature.

THE EFFECT OF LASER SURFASEMelting CORROSION PROTECTion ON Al ALLOYS

The supervisors are Assist. Prof. satha Sameh. The discussion was held on Khwarizmi court on 8/12/2014.

The aim of this research was to study the effect of laser surface treatment on corrosion for (7075, 6061 and 5083) aluminum alloys in NaCl solution of different concentrations. Disc samples of (7075, 6061 and 5083) aluminum alloys of 2 mm thickness and 25 mm diameter, have been prepared. Polarization tests were carried out   in (M lab potentiostat / galvanostat 200(2007) (Germany) at 298K temperature and (1.5, 2.5 and 3.5) % wt of NaCl solution.  The experiments were carried out before and after laser surface melting by (Nd:YAG, MED-810) pulse laser, system (Q-Switched Nd:YAG 1064/532nm). Before laser surface melting the results showed that the value of the corrosion current density obviously increases with increasing the concentration of NaCl from 1.5% to 3.5%.

As well as higher Cl- ions concentration more negative pitting potential (Epit) of aluminum alloys and decrease in the electrochemical stability of aluminum. The corrosion rate for the specimen 7075 is larger than that of 6061 and 5083 aluminum alloys under the same conditions. So it means that the specimens 6061 and 5083 have high resistance to corrosion in NaCl solution. After laser surface melting the results showed that the surface of aluminum alloys became more homogenous and pure after treatment. It was found that the corrosion current density decreases after Laser Surface melting at about three orders than that of untreated samples, therefore, the value of the corrosion rate of laser-treated alloy is smaller than that of the untreated. As well as the pitting corrosion potential after Laser Surface melting obviously shifted to more positive direction for all aluminum alloys in different concentrations of the NaCl solution.

Presence of workshop in information technology and communications centre
  28/9/2014

The information technology and communications centre had held a workshop on date 18th Sept 2014 and among the attendeeswereAssist. Lecturer SafaAmeen and Senior researcher NissrinNajim and Eng. SamahFaris.

The goal of this workshop was to discuss the activation stages of electronic front-page which builded up by the information technology and communications centre to support the Archive system of pre-planned, published and finished researches. Accordingly it is supposedly will erect a network of internal services (intranet) to simplify handling the researches system. The purpose of this electronic front-page is to receive and deliver researches and books which related to electronically through network to avoid the miss-conduct that might happened by ordinary mail system.

For such thing to be accomplished the following terms have been set them out:

1.       The system should be connected to internal services and a coordinator of internet unit (department’s candidate) with members from information technology and communications centre will do the job.

2.       Working electronically by system’s user (Senior researcher NissirnNajim) and a user name and password should be set out for the system which must be kept only to the user and the scientific deputy.
