The head of Roads and Bridges
Engineering Branch in Building and Construction Engineering Department
at the University of Technology Prof. Dr. Mohammad Yousif Fattah gained
patented about his research entitled
"PROTECTION OF STEEL REINFORCEMENT AGAINST CORROSION BY COATING WITH
PRESSURIZED RUBBER"
And this research was in conjunction with teachers: Lect.Dr Mustafa
Ahmed Yousif, lect. Shayma Khalid, and they are from the Civil
Engineering Department at the University of Mustansiriya.
The researcher Prof. Dr. Mohammad Yousif Fattah showed coating rebar rod
is one of the solutions to overcome the corrosion problem. Many
materials for coating are used including epoxy, gallons materials and
others which proved their effective despite of some problems, but these
materials are not economical due to the cost of materials and the cost
of the coat working, that its whole coast can be reached to 50% of rebar
cost.
In this study it is applied a new way of coating rebar rubber after
exposing it to high temperatures in a metal mold and exposing it to high
pressure up to about (200-220) atmospheric pressure so that we can get a
rebar coated with rubber has the same original rod shape but a diameter
larger. It has been found that the rate of used rubber corrosion
material when it placed in a saline concentrated solution of salt
(Na2SO4) under the American standard (ASTM G 109) for a period of 21
days is (0.000104) mm / day, equivalent to (0.038) mm / year and is a
small number and acceptable in direct exposure conditions so the
material can be considered suitable durability.
The test drag results proved on the production that the coated rebar
rods with rubber does not fail in its coated part which indicates that
this part has become stronger than the rest of the parts, and that the
yield stress and fatigue failure of iron rubber-coated was higher in
(13-14%) value of the coated iron which denotes getting the second
benefit of coating which is increasing the iron resistance.
The coating rebar with rubber way considered economical and easy due to
the low cost, compared with the common ways to protect the rebar like
gallons or epoxy coating and others. So it is recommended to use this
way especially in high-exposure areas of salts and moisture.
